Overview

Objectives

The rapid growth of the RMG sector coupled with current production and disposal practices has put increasing pressure on national resources and has contributed to environmental degradation.

Yet, general awareness of national and international environmental standards and the importance of natural-resource-saving technologies, appropriate waste management and preventive action is low.

The aim of the environmental standards component of PROGRESS is to promote eco-efficiency measures that minimize the use of natural resources (with a particular focus on energy saving) and to reduce harmful disposal of waste.

In this early phase of the program the focus is mainly on:

  • A baseline study of the RMG sector and identification of potential improvement measures
  • Pilot schemes and building up the local knowledge base
  • Promotion of low cost, yet high impact measures through the dissemination of best practices.

Achievements

  • A variety of low-cost, high-impact eco-efficiency measures have been identified through the baseline survey. Several energy-saving pilot schemes have been conducted.
  • Entrepreneurs and policy makers are more aware of effective eco-efficiency measures; RMG factories have been linked with suppliers of improved lighting systems.
  • Energy cost savings of up to 30% have been realized by factories that have introduced improved lighting systems.
